Hiking at Yading is hiking in the wonderful Tibetan highland where picturesque valleys are dotted with turquoise lakes and surrounded by stunning snow-capped peaks. There are two different ways of hiking at Yading, one is the day hiking that you have a nice day walk in the Yading Nature Reserve and the other one is to have over a week’s serious trekking around Yading. Introduction to Yading

Yading is the name of the village located south to the Tibetan town of Daocheng. Normally by driving it took up to three days before the road was under good condition before 2015. Now by driving it takes two days from Chengdu. And Chengdu becomes the first option as a stopover to travel to Yading, either by ground transfer or by air transfer. Yading Nature Reserve is located 75 km south to Daocheng, which is 430 km west to the town of Kangding. A driving trip from Chengdu will usually have the first night stay at Xinduqiao near Kangding and the second night in either Daocheng or Riwa, which is now the entrance of Yading. By driving you can also starts from Shangrila Town of Yunnan and it also takes two days but you need to fly to Shangrila Town first. There are available flights to Shangrila from Chengdu and Kunming at present.

Getting to Yading

One can also use the flight to fly to Yading. At present the direct flights you can find that fly to Yading are Chengdu, Xi’an. From Xi’an there is one flight MU2339 that leaves by 06:40 in the morning and arrives by 08:30. From Chengdu there are three flights that are CA4215 (0625-0725), MU2191 (0630-0730) and 3U8653 (0650-0750). The airport in Yading is called Daocheng Yading airport and it is located 120km north to Yading and 50km north to Daocheng.

A Yading Hiking trip usually starts in Chengdu and ends in Chengdu but you can also start from Xi’an by flying and ends in either Chengdu or Yunnan by driving.

Best Season for Trekking Yading

The best season to hike in Yading is from May to October although April and November it is also available. The best time to travel to Daocheng Yading is in July, August and October. In July and August is the warm summer time of Yading and October the weather is good and the Yading is in its golden color. December to the next March is the winter in Yading. A hiking in Yading Park is available as it is a well equipped park under good maintenance. But in winter the camping trek is not available. A camping trek involves camping at high elevation and walking over passes that are over 4800 meters. Yading is usually very dry and windy. Yading is getting popular since the airport is available so if you are traveling in the busy season, July, August and October, an early planning is a better idea.

How to plan a hiking trip to Yading

Duration and Transfer
Even in China for Chinese travelers, Yading is far. But the beautiful views usually hide far away from you. To plan a hiking trip to Yading, you will need a minimum of 3 days: one day fly in and acclimatize, second day walking in the park and the third day fly out or transfer to another destination. The fly to Yading takes about 1 hour from Chengdu. Airport to the closest accommodation place is about 2 hour’s drive. From Daocheng it is 1 hour’s drive to the entrance of Yading. From Riwa, the official entrance, you will need to use the tourist site bus to transfer to the walking board for 30 km. To walk the park you will need a minimum of 1 day. 1-2 Days

The 1-2 days hiking is the classic visit to Daocheng Yading. The park itself is composed of 2 main valleys. The valley towards south and west is to the Milk Lake and Wuse Lake, where you can also see south face of Chenrezig, north face of Chenadorje and Jampayang. The walking is between 3km and 10km single way. The other valley is to visit Pearl Lake and the north face of Chenrezig, it is about 2km single way.

There is another 1-2 days hiking which may involve camping for one night near the park. It is a loop connecting the two valleys. To enter either one valley and over the pass to spend one night over the pass by camping (the only option available). Although if you are good hiker, it is in total 25km walking over at least 2 main passes over 4500 meters, you can do it in one day and save the camping. Remember this hiking is not recommended by the local park because former hikers have lost and died on this route without proper preparation.

Day 1

Arrival in Chengdu

Arrival in Chengdu, capital of province Sichuan, the home town of Panda. Picked up by the local guide at airport and transferred to hotel. Afternoon visit people’s park and the wide and narrow alleys in Chengdu. 4 star hotel in Chengdu. (500m)

Day 2

Chengdu to Ya'an

Breakfas in hotel in Chengdu and in the morning drive about 2hr and half along Chengdu-Yaan Express by to Yaan, the famous Rainy City. On the way enjoy the rural scenery in western Sichuan Plain. Visit of the ancient town Shangli and the Pandas in Bifengxia near Yaan. Hotel in Chengdu. (160km)

Day 3

Ya'an to Danba

Breakfast in the hotel and drive from Yaan to Danba (1900 m). On the way visit of the Dengchigou Catholic Church in the Baoxing Panda Reserve. It is the place where the French preacher and biologist David found the giant pandas and introduced them overseas in 1869 and thus it has become an important humanistic spot as well. Drive over the Jiajin Shan Mountain to Danba. The local people are called Jiarong (Gyarong) Tibetans. Visit of the Jiaju.village More than one hundred buildings keep the same architectural style with a complete and unique character of Jiarong Tibetan residences. Under the blue sky, the Tibetan residences decorated in red, white and black are strewed randomly but also in order from the bottom to the middle slope of the valley. (360km) 10hrs.

Day 4

Explore Danba Villages

Breakfast in the hotel and visit Suopo village of the ancient block towers in Suopo. Danba is claimed to be the Kingdom of Thousands of Ancient Blockhouses. They were made of clay and block and look fine from outside with solid thick walls. Lunch in Danba and drive to Zhonglu village. Beautiful hike to different view point in the village to enjoy the local life of Tibetan. Boutique Hotel in Zhonglu. (2400m)

Day 5

Danba – Bamei – Tagong Si – Xinduqiao

Breakfast in the hotel and drive to Bamei and Tagong to Xinduqiao. On the way visit of the Tagong Stupa and Tagong Monastery, where you can admire a beautiful panorama of the holy Yala Mountain (5820m) in a distance on clear days. Then transfer to Xinduqiao, a small but important town at the juncture of the North and South Sichuan-Tibet Highway. If weather allows, we can explore the main peak of Mt Gongga (7556m). Day 6

Xinduqiao - Yajiang – Litang

Breakfast in the hotel and drive to Yajiang, Litang (4014 m). Drive along Hengduan Montain Ranges from north to south. Enjoy the beautiful glacier, ice-covered mountains, highland lakes. Litang is also known as “highland city”. Arrival, visit Litang monastery, it was built in 1580 and visit 7th Dalai lama’s birth place.l (220km) 5hrs. Hotel in Litang.

Day 7

Litang – Daocheng- Riwa

Breakfast in the hotel and drive to Daocheng- Riwa. Mt Haizi Shan, a right place to study the structure of terrain and the formation of glacier. On the way visit of the Bangpu monastery which is the one of the oldest temple in Daocheng, which has over 900 years history. Late in the afternoon we reach the highlight of this journey – Yading nature reserve, home of three sacred Tibetan mountains – Chenresigi, Avalokitesvara, 6032m), Jambeyang, Manjusri, 5958m), and Chanadorjei, Vajrapani, 5958m). The scenery here easily rivals that of national parks of the west such as Yellowstone and Yosemite in terms of spectacularity. Hotel in Riwa or (Shangrila). (200km 5hrs).

Day 8

Riwa – Yading. Start 2 days trekking to the holy mountain of 32km

Breakfast in the hotel and drive 30km to Longlongba (3770m), the entrance of Yading Nature Reserve. Start trekking at Chonggu Monastery (4000m) and next proceed to Chenresing Mountain with mystery Dumu Lake or (milk lake) at its mountain foot. Visit Milk Lake and 5 Color Lake continue to trekking up to the pass (4665) to exploration Yading natural beauty. Hike down and camp. Stay in the tent. (4480m) first day about 16 km and 8 or 9 hrs hike.

Day 9

Second day Yading trekking

Breakfast at camping site and continue trekking to enjoy amazing view of holy MT Chenresing to Pearl Lake (4140m) to Chong Gu Monastery and then back to the park entrance at Long Long Ba. Second day about 16 km and 8 or 9 hrs hike, Take bus 30m to Riwa twon. Hotel in Riwa.

Day 10

Riwa- Litang- Xinduqiao

Breakfast in the hotel and drive to Litang and Xiduqiao. This is day mostly driving on the beautiful road and enjoy amazing natural scenery of Tibetan platuea. Hotel in Xinduqiao. (460km) 10 h

Day 11

Xinduqiao - Kangding - Chengdu

Breakfast in the hotel and drive to Kangding. Visit Kangding monastery and lunch at Kangding. Afternoon drive to Chengdu. (340km) 6h. Check to 4 star hotel in Chengdu.

Day 12

Depart Chengdu

Breakfast in the hotel and drive to Chengdu airport. Say good bye to our guests.
